Using our proprietary key bow (head) reduction method, Keyport removes a significant portion of the key's head and attaches to it a smaller one-size-fits-all head called a Skull resulting in a shorter, thinner key blank. This provides the foundation upon which Keyport designs its devices. On top of being able to fit into Keyport devices, Keyport Blades offer a superior alternative to traditional key blanks as they allow for better organization, easier storage, and more effective customization.

Keyport can accommodate most auto keys including a wide variety transponder chipped auto keys.

Chipped Auto Keys

Regular auto keys with plastic heads look virtually the same as chipped keys, so you cannot easily determine if they have a chip based on your key’s physical appearance. There is a high likelihood that your car has a chip if it is a model made after 1995. Chipped keys take up two ports in your Keyport – one for the Blade and one for the chip insert.

To determine if your auto key has a chip, click here and check its compatibility with Keyport. If you find that your key is chipped and compatible, please select a chipped auto Blade when configuring your Keyport and make sure to list your auto's Year / Make / Model on your Key ID Form.

Chipped Key Programming Options

There are two possible scenarios for chipped auto keys:

On-Board Programmable (OBP) Chips – Certain chipped vehicles contain On-Board Programmable (OBP) chips which allow the customer to self-program the chip in their auto key. In these instances, we are able to send a Blade and chip insert along with a basic set of programming instructions without requiring a copy of your key. We will let you know if your particular vehicle includes OBP during the order process.
Non OBP Chips – For those chipped vehicles that are not OBP, we offer 2 options:

Option 1 - We send you the chip and the Blade to get programmed and duplicated by an auto locksmith or auto dealer service department. This service will cost you an additional charge between $35 and $100 depending on the locksmith or dealer. You can call your dealer or an auto locksmith in your area to determine the cost. For a list of capable auto locksmiths in your area checkout our Merchant Locator or visit Keyless Ride's Auto Locksmith Locator.

Option 2 - We can custom convert your key. We will need you to send us a copy of your vehicle's key that we custom convert by removing the shank and the chip. In this case, we would like you to send us the valet key. The valet key is the one that still contains a chip and operates your vehicle, but does not contain buttons on the head. Since the key you send is pulled apart to convert to a Blade and chip insert, we do not want to modify an expensive key fob when an alternative is available. Please note that you will not get your key back in its original condition upon conversion as your key will be converted to a Keyport Blade and chip insert.

Auto Fob or Separate Remote

While the Keyport does not yet incorporate your lock/unlock buttons, there are several alternatives that offer you the best of both worlds.

Alternative 1: Ditching the Remote Lock/Unlock

A number of our customers choose the minimalist route, retiring their remote, and using their Keyport Slide to manually lock and unlock their doors.

"The entire keyport is smaller than just my previous vehicle remote. It took about three times of opening the car with the keyport before I didn't think about it again. The simplicity of the keyport outweighs any small convenience of a remote. I had reservations about not using my car remote, but I'll never go back to a standard keychain, or bulky remote. Love the product!" ~ Eric M.

Alternative 2: Attach the Keyport via Detachable Lanyard or Mini-String
A number of our customers who prefer their original key fobs utilize our optional lanyard to attach their auto fob to their Keyport. This dramatically cleans up what they carry and melds the best of both worlds. This is a great way to get started if you are uncertain about converting your auto key or if your auto key is incompatible. For those who prefer to carry their fob or autokey with buttons on the head, we offer a couple of optional lanyards - one fixed and one quick-release.

Keyport on Lanyard

I love my Keyport. Being a manager at a store, I have a lot of keys and Keyport has let me get rid of all those dangling keys into one sleek package. Although Keyport does not have a current solution for my Car key and door opener (my door opener and key are in one unit), it is easy enough to attach my car key to the Keyport with the quick release lanyard. I try to bicycle commute often so when I don't take out the car, I simply unclip my car key and have less bulk. Even with the car key attached, it is far more superior solution than having a whole bunch of keys dangling around." ~ Katsu T.

Alternative 3: Unattached to the Keyport; Carried Separately
For many of our customers, a Keyport provides them the freedom to carry their auto fob separately. This offers them the convenience of having easy access to the fob when they need it and being able to put it away when they don't without giving up easy access to the rest of their every day carry tools. These customers also find that carrying the Keyport and fob in the same pocket, yet leaving them unattached allows them to more easily pull out the one they need without unintentionally hooking other items like a traditional keychain often does.

Keyport has changed my life….literally. I no longer have to drag around a purse everywhere I go to carry my keychain amongst other things. I love having my car fob completely separate. I can keep it in the same pocket as my Keyport, and its easy to tell them apart, so I only pull out the one I really need at the time. It makes things so much easier, especially when I am shuffling my kids about and need every advantage I can get." ~ Stephanie C.

Incompatible Auto Keys

Click here for a list of incompatible auto keys. If you determine your auto key is not compatible, you can easily attach it to the detachable lanyard.
Interference Issues
While a key may be compatible with the Keyport, there are rare cases where the ignition itself will not allow access to a Blade extended from a Keyport (for example, the steering column shifter on some Chevy and GMC models with automatic transmissions). Keyport cannot guarantee a lock's accessibility and is not responsible for interference-related issues. In these cases, the Blade may be removed from the Keyport and attached to the quick-release lanyard.

Designed by an avid motorcyclist, Keyport solves the most common key issues motorcycles face on a daily basis including:

  • Keys rattling and scratching the triple tree as they flop around in the wind
  • Removing the bike key from the ring on each ride and storing your other keys uncomfortably in your pocket
  • Keeping your bike key separately at all times and misplacing it.

Keyport is compatible with nearly any motorcycle including motorcycles equipped with transponder-chipped keys.

Chipped Motorcycle Keys

Most motorcycles in the U.S. do not utilize transponder chip technology in their keys. Several Ducati’s, BMW’s and Vespa Scooters 2001+ are chipped. Depending upon the make and model, international motorcycle/scooter keys may be chipped. If you believe your key is chipped, please select the chipped auto bundle, and make sure to list your motorcycle's year/make/model on your Key ID Form. If your bike is chipped, we will most likely require you to send us a copy of the key for custom conversion to a Keyport Blade. Chipped keys take up two ports in your Keyport – one for the Blade and one for the chip insert.

Rare Motorcycle Keys

There are rare cases where we cannot obtain the proper blank for your bike key. In particular, some newer models of BMW motorcycles require the owner to purchase copies from the dealer only. In this case, you must send your key to us for custom conversion.

Incompatible Motorcycle Keys

The only known motorcycle keys that are not yet Keyport compatible are the cylinder keys found on certain
Harley Davidson models.

Interference Issues
While a particular motorcycle key may be compatible with the Keyport, there are rare cases where the ignition itself will not allow access to a Blade extended from a Keyport. Therefore, we suggest that you make sure that you have enough leg room if your ignition is on the side of your motorcycle. Keyport cannot guarantee a lock's accessibility and is not responsible for interference-related issues.

Common High Security Keys Converted to Keyport Blades

Keyport is compatible with the most popular brands of high-security keys including Medeco, Assa, Mul-T-Lock, Abloy, and Schlage Primus. High-security/restricted keys are often protected by patent, which prohibits other manufacturers from making unauthorized productions of the key blank. To get a high-security key converted to a Keyport Blade you must send us a copy. There is no extra charge for the conversion when you purchase a Keyport bundle. If you are not sure if your particular high-security key is compatible, email a picture to helpdesk@mykeyport.com.
